Missouri jobless rate resumes climb in May - Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal:

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increasedr to 9 percentin May, up from 8.1 percen t in April. April’s 0.6 point decrease in unemployment nowappearws anomalous, with the May increase part of an upward trendx dating back to mid-2008, statd officials said. Approximately 272,000 Missourians were estimated to have been jobless during the monthof May. Nonfarm payroll employmenf decreasedby 3,700 jobs in May, marking the smallesft monthly decrease since employment began to drop sharplyg last November.
Job losses were concentrated inmanufacturinfg (-3,700) and construction (-1,600), which were partly offsett by gains in health care and sociak assistance (2,000) and local government (900). Over the past year, employmengt dropped by 74,300 jobs, or 2.7 percent. The main exceptiond to the downward trend over the year have been privatwe educationalservices (2,500), health care and social assistance federal government (2,700) and localk government (3,300). The national unemployment rate in Maywas 9.4 Nonfarm payroll employment in May was down in St. Louiw by 4,100, led by automobile industry layoffs and a cutbackj of federal employees following the end ofsome pre-201 Census activities.
