The national project supports the U.S. Office of Domestix Preparedness and the in efforts to use the resourceds ofthe nation's community and technical colleges in homelanc security and emergency preparedness training. The Maricopa Community Colleges will serve as a regionao facilitator in strategic planning with state homeland securithy offices and provide emergency preparedness trainingv needs in the western region whichincludes Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii and various Pacific Islands.
"While most professionsx commonly identified with homeland security are employedc by police andfire agencies, the definition continuesa to expand," said Mary director of the Center for Workforcwe Development. "For instance, private security guards have the potential of beinhg the first responders toan incident; healtg workers may be the first to recognizee patterns of illness that indicate epidemicsz or attacks; and environmental worker s are likely to assist in managinf an incident instead of just cleanin g it up afterward. Acknowledging the role of thesse groups will lead to better planning and ultimately better response to publicsafetuy threats.
